UK: Drugs worth £400 seized in house raid

North Devon Journal

Thursday 09 Aug 2012

DRUGS with a street value of hundreds of pounds were seized by police following a raid at a house in Barnstaple a court has heard.

Michelle Nott, 49, and Martin John Hoyles, 51, both of 36 Forches Avenue, appeared before North Devon Magistrates' Court in separate cases on Friday.

Nott pleaded guilty to possession of 68.56g of cannabis and cannabis resin.

Hoyles pleaded guilty to possession of 33.9g of amphetamine and admitted breaching a conditional discharge which was imposed in November for the theft of £75 worth of football stickers.

The court heard that unemployed Nott, a cannabis user, bought the drugs in bulk after raising some cash at a car boot sale.

Lyndsey Baker, for the prosecution, said officers conducted a warrant at the defendant's home and found her and her brother at the address.

She said police found various quantities of cannabis around the house with a street value of just over £400.

Nott said it was for her own use.

Tim Hook, for the defence, said she was buying it in larger quantities because she was a regular user and it worked out cheaper.

He said she suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and took seven prescribed tablets a day.

He said: "The cannabis puts her in a much calmer frame of mind in her own home. It has not led to any criminality."

Magistrates gave her a four month curfew from 7pm to 7am.

Miss Baker said the amphetamine was found in Hoyles bedroom under a pile of clothes.

Mr Hook said Hoyles was self employed and repairs cars.

"He works late in the evening. He takes the amphetamine to wake himself," he said.

Magistrates gave him a 12-month conditional discharge.

They revoked the conditional discharge imposed for the theft and resentenced him to a £100 fine. He was ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.

Magistrates ordered the destruction of the drugs.
