Czech: More cannabis, less cocaine trafficked through Czech Republic

Prague Daily Monitor

Friday 10 Aug 2012

Czech customs officers seized over two kilograms of marijuana in airport and post controls in the first half of the year, which was 800 grams more than in the same period last year, while the number of hard drug couriers decreased, Martina Kankova told CTK yesterday.

Kankova, spokeswoman for the Customs General Directorate (GRC), said marijuana shipments came to the Czech Republic mainly from Spain or on their way to Britain.

She said the customs officers seized a big quantity of chemicals with which the drug producers imitate the effective substances in marijuana, known as synthetic cannabinoids.

In the first half of last year, the customs officers uncovered 193 grams of them coming from China, this year it was two and a half kilograms also from China and 142 kilograms hidden in a goods shipment from India.

"Hard drugs have been reduced. The customs offices are largely successful in uncovering them. That is why couriers are seeking routes across other countries," Kankova said.

She said the customs officers also recorded a decrease in the number of "swallowers," or couriers who transport drugs in their bodies.

From January to July last year two cocaine shipments were seized. A Croat carried 670 grams along the Lima-Amsterdam-Prague line and another shipment of almost three kilograms was sent from Lima to Prague via Madrid.

This year no such shipment has been uncovered, but customs officers seized 140 grams of coca leaves in post from Bolivia.

The customs officers also seized 63 kilograms of khat which is on the list of addictive substances in the Czech Republic, brought from Britain in two shipments.

Kath is grown mainly in the east of Africa. Kankova said the seized shipments were not probably destined for the Czech drug market.

Further drugs were also registered by the Customs Anti-Drug Unit (CPJ) that seizes drugs in long-time investigation and monitoring, car checks in border areas or in home searches.

These customs officers uncovered more than 48 kilograms of khat last year. This year they seized a total of 72 kilograms in two cases.

They also found this year 126 kilograms of mephedrone, a stimulating drug, also known as meow, whose chemical composition is similar to the effective substance from khat.

CPJ members also found marijuana - 69 shipments weighing a total of 78 kilograms last year, and 45 kilograms in 45 shipments this year.

The CPJ like customs officers registered a decrease in hard drugs.

Kankova said last year they uncovered 11 kilograms in 12 shipments, this year only 163 grams in two portions.

CPJ members would not say from where the shipments came or where they were headed not to endanger the investigation.
