UK: Pair jailed for growing cannabis in house in Peterborough

Two men who grew cannabis plants in their Peterborough home in an attempt to pay off their drug debts have been jailed today (Friday).

Stuart Adamson (38) and Carl Simner (33) were both arrested after police raided the pair's home in Fengate, Peterborough, on February 22.

Officers found a total of 29 cannabis plants along with drug-producing equipment including fans, lighting and filter systems.

The police said that the street value of the plants would have been an estimated £13,516.

The pair, both heroin users, appeared at Peterborough Crown Court for sentencing today.

Simner, who owned the property, had previously pleaded guilty to permitting his premises to be used for the production of cannabis and Adamson had pleaded guilty to producing cannabis.

Adamson was jailed for six months and Simner was jailed for four months.

The court heard that both men owed money to drug dealers, with Adamson owing them £20,000.

This led them to being coerced into using the property to grow cannabis which could then be sold on, enabling their dealers to be paid off.

Laurence Bruce, defending Adamson, said: "This man got himself into a difficult predicament.

"He cannot work due to a previous injury and he found himself in serious debt to his dealer.

"When the dealer didn't get his payments he sent round the heavies and threatened the defendant with violence.

"The dealer then offered a plan B, which was to use the home to grow cannabis.

"The defendant stood to gain nothing financially form this arrangement other than to get the dealer off his back."

Mr Bruce also questioned the police's street value of the cannabis plants found at the property, suggesting the value was more likely to be between £5,000 and £6,000.

Alison Marsh, defending Simner, said: "He got involved out of coercion, naivety and foolishness.

"He felt he had no other option.

"Custody would be detrimental to him. He has been using heroin since the age of 14 and he needs help for his drug addiction."
