ASHFIELD police were instrumental in the discovery of a hydroponic marijuana crop worth more than $500,000 at a house earlier this month.

The command's proactive crime team helped uncover the illegal operation at Mons St, Canterbury, along with officers from strike force Zambesi.

"(The investigation is) an identification program for enhanced indoor cultivation of cannabis," Ashfield LAC crime manager Detective Inspector Eric Coffen said.

Ashfield police executed a search warrant at the home on August 8, where they seized 181 cannabis plants and seedlings.

The plants had a potential value of $563,000, he said.

A man, 49, was and charged with enhanced cultivation of a plant for commercial purposes and cultivate prohibited plant greater than a commercial quantity.
