Tirana. Albanian police said Thursday they have seized over 880 kilos of cannabis in a crackdown on trafficking in the Balkans country, considered a main transport hub for drugs destined for Western Europe, AFP reported.
On Tuesday police seized more than 600 kilos (1,300 pounds) of cannabis due to be smuggled to Greece near the southern Albanian towns of Saranda and Gjirokastra. Two smugglers were arrested.

The same day, another 187 kilos of cannabis were discovered hidden in a truck getting ready to board a ferry to Italy, police said.

On Wednesday the authorities destroyed dozens of marijuana plants and seized another 94 kilos of cannabis after raiding the homes of several suspects in northern Albania.

In a separate incident a 60-year-old woman was arrested trying to smuggle 500 gramms of cocaine on an Italy-bound ferry late Wednesday.

Albania is considered an important Balkan transit zone for narcotics and the main provider of marijuana in Europe, according to international police reports.

Since the start of this year police in Albania have seized more than five tonnes of cannabis destined for the European market.
