UK: Biggest ever cannabis operation in Cheshire wipes out alleged £2m drug gang in Runcorn

DAWN raids wiped out an alleged £2m drugs gang dubbed Runcorn's "main organised crime group" by police.

Strike teams stormed more than two dozen properties across the town yesterday to capture suspected dealers.

A total of 23 men were taken into custody in the biggest crackdown on drugs ever carried out by Cheshire Police.

All were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cannabis and were connected to a drug organisation said to be making £6,000 a day.

Police said the men were helping officers with their enquiries and more arrests were expected to be made.

About 300 officers were involved in Operation Gram – a series of early morning raids to target the suspected use and supply of cannabis in the town.

Specialist officers were used to force entry to 25 properties and search experts were yesterday combing all the addresses for evidence.

The operation was led by officers from Runcorn Neighbourhood Policing Unit, supported by colleagues from across the force.

Inspector Gareth Lee said: "The strike phase is the result of a 12-month operation by local officers focusing on a number of individuals suspected of being involved in illegal drugs in Runcorn.

"Over that period intelligence and evidence has been gathered surrounding the use and supply of cannabis across the town.

"This has culminated in a number of high-profile raids, which we hope will send out a strong message that this sort of behaviour is not welcome."

Police were knocking on residents’ doors yesterday to reassure them and patrols in targeted areas were increased.

Inspector Lee said the suspects "acted like a business" and worked from 11am-11pm, drawing on supplies from homegrown set-ups to importing from outside Runcorn in lean times.

A second phase of the clampdown, due to follow the raids, will see 100 suspected users rounded up and referred to rehabilitation programmes, or punished with cautions or through the courts.
