Australia: GPs disappoint on cannabis help

GPs feel poorly equipped and unmotivated to help patients with cannabis-related problems and this is reflected in patients’ disappointment in the care they receive, Australian research shows.

A survey of 41 patients who consulted their GP for cannabis related concerns found that most did not feel satisfied with the encounter.

Research conducted by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre at the University of NSW found that most patients did not expect the GP to successfully help them with their cannabis concerns.

Only one in four expected their GP to personally offer an intervention or treatment, and in reality only 7% had this as an actual outcome. One in three patients received a referral to...
