THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Lusaka has arrested a woman suspected to be one of the key suppliers of cannabis to Lusaka's notorious Chibolya township.

Public relations officer Samuel Silomba in a statement yesterday said Brendah Zulu, 35, of Makeni area in Lusaka has been arrested for trafficking in 99.2 kilogrammes of loose cannabis which was concealed in a 01 x 90kg bag and three bags popularly known as 'Ukwa'.

He said this is the second time that Ms Zulu has been arrested by the DEC.
And the commission has arrested a taxi driver of Nakonde District for trafficking in miraa.

Mr Silomba said Markian Silwamba, 30, a taxi driver of Mukoma village in Nakonde District has been arrested for trafficking in 127 bundles of miraa weighing 60.9 kilogrammes.

He said the drugs were concealed in two suitcases and two 'Ukwa' bags.
Mr Silomba said the suspect was apprehended at Kalungu check point and the vehicle that he was driving has since been seized by the commission for further investigations.

And Mr Silomba said in the past seven days, the commission has arrested over 30 people countrywide for trafficking in different quantities of illicit drugs.

He said among those arrested is Nason Phiri, 29, of Bauleni in Lusaka for trafficking in 15 sachets of cocaine.
Mr Silomba said all the suspects are in custody and will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, the Immigration Department arrested a suspected Congolese pastor and a Zambian national for obtaining money by false pretence.

Department public relations officer Phoebe Nawa said the duo purported to be taking the money to immigration officers at Lusaka regional office to secure the release of detained suspected prohibited immigrants thus tarnishing the image of the department.
They are currently in detention pending prosecution.

And the department on Friday deported two of the three Nigerian nationals who were found with police items and were successfully prosecuted for the offence of unlawful stay and harbouring contrary to the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010, Ms Nawa said.

Ms Nawa has also warned that it was an offence to masquerade as immigration officer and that the department would not hesitate to bring such individuals to book.

"Further, as a department we wish to advise the general public that fees that are paid for the various permits and visas issued by the department are prescribed fees and that they should at all times ensure that they obtain a receipt for every payment that they make" she said.
