The Shumen District Court has sentenced a Dutch national to four years of imprisonment and a fine of BGN 20 000 for drug production.

The magistrates approved Monday a plea bargain between the prosecutor's office and the defendant who pleaded guilty, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

The 32-year old Dutch national, charged with producing and storing drugs, has been in custody since August when he was handed to the authorities by a Dutch court.

He is one of the owners of a sewing factory in the northeastern town of Novi Pazar, which was raided by police in December 2011, with the operation uncovering a cutting-edge cannabis farm located four meters underground.

The production cycle was fully automated.

The underground cannabis farm had 550 pots of cannabis up to 180 cm high, 6 kg of dried cannabis and cannabis sprouts.

In August, when he was remanded in custody, the defendant said in court that he was aware that Bulgarian legislation defined growing cannabis as a crime.
