UK: Audrey and Robert Gray grew cannabis plants

A MOTHER and son who ran a café have been sentenced in court after police found thousands of pounds worth of cannabis plants in the attic.

Audrey Gray, 62, and Robert Gray, 33, both of New Lane, Huntington, York, together ran the Rendezvous Café, in Gowthorpe, Selby, where police discovered 29 plants of the Class C drug in a raid last year.

Officers had climbed on to a second storey roof of the café and smelled the cannabis from an upstairs room, a sentencing hearing heard at York Crown Court.

After returning with a search warrant, two officers found a sophisticated drug operation in the attic, the court heard.

The officers discovered the plants of which 20 were determined to be able to reach their full potential. If sold in ounce wraps the potential street value of the plants could have reached £8,000.

Police also seized a haul of cannabis cultivation equipment. A further raid at the Grays' shared York home uncovered three further plants in Robert Gray's bedroom, dozens of cannabis seedlings and a haul of drug paraphernalia.

While experts could not put a cost estimate on what the seedlings, if they had grown to their full potential, could have reached, the three plants discovered in the wardrobe of the property could have fetched £800 in street sales.

Audrey Gray, who pleaded guilty to permitting premises to be used for the production of cannabis, had "turned a blind eye" to her son's drug operation, said Mark Partridge, mitigating. She was given a two-year conditional discharge.

Robert Gray had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to the production of cannabis. The court heard how he had previously claimed the drugs were for his personal use, but Judge Roger Ibbotson had rejected those claims saying the haul found was "too significant".

Robert Gray was jailed for a year and ten months, and a further three months, to be served consecutively, for breaking the terms of a previous suspended sentence.
