UK: Dad grows weed 'to alleviate' wife's depression

A 48-YEAR-OLD Ammanford dad-of-two grew cannabis in a spare room of the family home in the hope the drug could alleviate his wife's depression, a court has been told.

Gareth Jones, of Plot Two of Cennyn Terrace in Derwydd, was arrested during a 7pm police raid on the property on September 11.

Llanelli magistrates heard how Jones' wife had been diagnosed with depression following the death of her mother,but had seen little benefit from prescription medication.

Following conversations with friends, Jones then took it upon himself to grow the Class Bdrug at home.

Urging leniency, prosecutor Ellie Morgan told magistrates Jones had co-operated fully with the officers.

"He showed the police to an upstairs bedroom where two growing tents had been setup," said Ms Morgan. "Inside were lighting systems, fans and 30 cannabis plants at various stages of growth."

In interview, Jones, who does not smoke the drug, said he believed it was legal for personal or medicinal use.

"My wife uses it as an alternative medication," Jones said.

"I thought if I'm going to grow it, I might as well do enough for the year."

Richard Morgan, defending, told magistrates Jones had become increasing worried about his wife's situation. "He was quite concerned and felt her medication was not resolving the problem," said Mr Morgan.

Friends told Jones cannabis was known to relieve depression.

"He was not smoking it himself, but growing it solely for the purpose of dealing with the difficulties of his wife's depression," Mr Morgan added. "He believed it was legal in the confines of your own home because of the growing kits hew as able to buy.

"He showed a lack of understanding and a degree of naivete with regards cannabis."

Jones pleaded guilty to growing the ClassBdrug.

Magistrates sentenced Jones to a 12-week prison term, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs.
