UK: Huge cannabis factory found in Long Eaton's former Galaxy cinema
Derby Telegraph Tuesday 30 Oct 2012 Officers spent six hours clearing more than 1,500 plants from the former Galaxy cinema, in Derby Road, yesterday. Police were first called to the town-centre building, which has been unused for six months, at 9.30am on Saturday. They found plants growing in six different rooms as well as hydroponics set-ups, lighting, ducting and high-powered lamps. The equipment was taken away in skips yesterday while the plants were removed for analysis. Police said no arrests had been made. PC Steve Bruce, who is leading the investigation, said: "By the time the rooms are cleared more than 1,500 suspected cannabis plants will have been found inside the six rooms. "I have been told this is not a record number for Derbyshire. "Apparently that is closer to 3,000 plants. "But I am certain it is the most ever found at one property in Long Eaton. "Almost all of the building was being used for the growing and cultivation of cannabis. "Temporary tents had been set up to maximise growth and seats from the cinema had been ripped out and moved to other rooms to make the space even bigger. "This was a professional and ongoing growth where drugs had already been cropped and new seedlings were ready to take their place. "If this had gone undetected for a long time we could be talking about tens of millions of pounds worth of cannabis." Craig Harrison, 27, works behind the bar at the Stage 1 bar, which is next door but one to the former cinema. He said: "I have seen the front door bent back. I just assumed that maybe squatters had moved in." Fred Westwick, 68, of Shakespeare Street, Long Eaton, said he had no idea that so many plants had been inside the building. He said: "Whoever has grown these drugs must have been very discreet. "I walk past the building every day and have never once got a smell of cannabis." Peter Veazey, who lives on the Petersham estate in the town, said: "I have lived in Long Eaton for all of my 56 years and have never known anything like it. "You expect to hear about large amounts of drugs being grown in Derby or Nottingham but not here in Long Eaton." Members of the public alerted police after a number of calls were made about a suspected burglary. Officers stood guard at the front and back of the former cinema all day yesterday while the equipment was dismantled and the plants removed. In a separate incident in the town, police found suspected cannabis plants during a raid on a home in Neale Street after a tip-off . Officers said what they believed was "a substantial cannabis grow" was found in the loft. A 49-year-old man was arrested. The equipment was dismantled and plants were taken away. The raid took place on October 15 but police have only now released the details. http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/Huge-cannabis-factory-Long-Eaton-s-Galaxy-cinema/story-17198019-detail/story.html
