Man gets four years in Dubai jail for possessing cannabis plants

“Is baby tree and not big one”, defendant told court

Dubai: A supervisor has been sentenced to four years in jail for possessing cannabis seeds which he intended to plant in his garden and use.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 35-year-old Emirati supervisor, N.K, of possessing cannabis in the form of a small tree which he intended to use for himself.

“I am guilty. I possessed banned substances. But I did not plant the tree in the garden. It was not planted yet and it is not a tree, but it’s a baby tree. I possessed it and was supposed to grow it until it seeds so I could consume the cannabis,” the defendant earlier told Presiding Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi.

Prosecutors accused N.K. of possessing 22 capsules of Tramadol and 24 Clonazepam pills and consuming hashish and other forms of banned substances.

An Emirati Dubai police anti-narcotics lieutenant testified that an informant tipped them off that the defendant possessed and consumed drugs.

“The informant alerted us that N.K. possessed and consumed drugs in a tyres place in Al Barsha.

“We obtained prosecutors’ permission and raided the shop and arrested the defendant. We accompanied him to his residence in Al Barsha to search it.

“We found the cannabis seeds and a small tree and the other drug pills hidden in a handbag under the dining table. He confessed that he took the baby tree from his friend in order to grow it in his garden,” claimed the lieutenant.

“I am the sole bread earner for my mother, family and sister. I want a swift judgment,” N.K. told the court.
