UK: Wales: Garnant man used cannabis as painkiller

A 48-YEAR-OLD Garnant man who uses cannabis to counter his constant pain has been granted a 12-month conditional discharge.

Andrew Collins, of 9 Maes y Bedol, was arrested by police following a late-night raid on his home on September 18.

Llanelli magistrates were told how officers arrived at Collins’ home at 1.10am.

Gerald Neave, prosecuting, said the police had received a call from “what sounded like an intoxicated female” regarding the address.

When the officers arrived, Collins was sitting in the front roomof the house playing computer games.

“There was a small amount of cannabis resin and on a nearby table was a tobacco tin containing a small amount of cannabis leaf,”

saidMrNeave.

When interviewed, Collins confirmed the drug belonged to him.

“He said he had bought it and intended to smoke it,” said Mr Neave.

“He apologised and said he would take whatever punishment he deserved for the offence.”

AndrewIsaacs, defending, told the court Collins used the drug as a painkiller.

“This gentleman received a very serious injury a fewyears ago and lost his spleen.

“He is in pain every single day.

“Hecannot drink alcohol and he takes cannabis occasionally to deal with that pain.”

Collins admitted possession of 2.49 grammes of the ClassBdrug.

Magistrates granted Collins a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered he pay £85 court costs.
