Drug users in Europe shifting from heroin to cannabis - Report
kuna.net Thursday 15 Nov 2012 But while heroin-related problems continue, they do so at lower levels, says the EU drugs agency (EMCDDA) in its annual report 2012 on the state of the drugs problem in Europe, launched Thursday. "We may now be moving into a new era in which heroin will play a less central role in Europe's drugs problem," pointed the report. Changes in heroin availability in Europe may be linked to a 'shift in drug use patterns', says the EMCDDA. Some countries in Europe report that opioids other than heroin are now cited as the main problem drug. Europe, a major cannabis consumer, is now an important producer of this; its most popular illicit drug. The report shows that the number of herbal cannabis seizures made in Europe has increased steadily since 2005 with an estimated 382,000 seizures in 2010. Some 80.5 million Europeans (15-64 years) have tried cannabis in their lifetime, around 23 million of them having used it in the last year. Concerns remain around the three million Europeans (15-64 years) who still use the drug on a daily basis (around 1 pct of the European adult population). New data show a small decrease in drug-induced deaths in the EU Member States and Norway from around 7,600 in 2009 to 7,000 in 2010.
