UK: Drug dealing prison officer jailed

Littlehampton Gazette

Thursday 06 Dec 2012

A former prison officer from Folkestone who supplied cannabis to inmates has been jailed for more than five years, police have said.

A judge told Daniel McKenzie, 28, that he had betrayed the trust of his employers, the public and his colleagues.

He was working as a prison officer at a Kent jail on February 28 when he was seen entering the cell of two inmates in contravention of prison policy.

McKenzie, of Cheriton Road, Folkestone, was suspended from duty, and during an investigation by police he admitted supplying two prisoners with the drug.

He also admitted supplying cocaine to two friends and possessing cocaine with intent to supply, police said.

McKenzie, who had undergone corruption prevention training as a prison officer, quit his post at HMP Elmley in April, four months before being charged with four drugs offences.

Sentencing him to five years and four months jail at Canterbury Crown Court, Judge James O'Mahony told him: "You betrayed the trust of your employers, the public and your colleagues.

"What you have done undermines what is essential in prison - the maintenance of order."

Following the case, Detective Constable James Unwin, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "McKenzie was put in a position of trust, which he then abused for his own gain.

"Those who serve the Crown are expected to carry out their duties with the utmost professionalism and McKenzie not only failed to do this but also broke the law."
