UK: MPs put pressure on David Cameron over drugs legalisation By Robert Watts, Deputy Political Editor The Telegraph Saturday 08 Dec 2012 A report by members of the Home Affairs Select Committee will claim that Britain is losing its war on drugs and that current laws are not fit for purpose, according to the Mail on Sunday. One MP on the panel told the newspaper: “The general view [of the committee] was that the drug laws in Britain are all a bit out-dated. We have a Drugs Act that’s really outlived its usefulness and that really belongs in the 1960s and 1970s. "It seems to deal with the drugs world as a fairly simple market with a relatively small number of controlled substances out there. But that’s not the case. [We are] fighting a losing battle over drugs policy". The recommendations of Royal Commissions are not legally binding, but their findings are hard for Prime Ministers to dismiss. It is understood that the committee will call for the Commission’s report to be published prior to the next general election in 2015. In the UK, under the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act, possession of Class A drugs – ecstasy, LSD, heroin, cocaine, crack and magic mushrooms – carries a jail sentence of up to seven years, while dealing carries a term of up to life. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/9732459/MPs-put-pressure-on-David-Cameron-over-drugs-legalisation.html
