UK: Fire rips through suspected cannabis factory

POLICE have launched an investigation today after a huge fire swept through a suspected drugs factory in Newtown this morning.

Officers discovered what are thought to be 63 cannabis plants in a gutted terraced house in Liverpool Road soon after the blaze broke out there at 5.45am.

No-one was in the property at the time, but terrified neighbours ran from their homes as the inferno engulfed the building - shattering the windows and causing the roof to collapse.

Father-of-two Narayan Kandel, 40, was woken by the commotion and watched from his house opposite. He said: "We could see these massive flames coming from the roof and there were all these people out in the street yelling and shouting and scared it would spread to other houses."

Crews from Whitley Wood and Wokingham Road fire stations arrived within minutes and spent three hours tackling the blaze and preventing it from spreading. They also isolated the power supplies and spent the rest of today dampening down the badly damaged building.

Forensics officers sealed off the road while they confiscated the plants, scoured the scene for clues and conducted door to door enquiries.

No arrests have been made and police spokesman Craig Evry said: "The premises was empty and no-one was injured but a quantity of what was believed to be cannabis plants were seized. We're looking into how the fire started and working with the fire brigade in our investigations."
