UK: PM snub to call for legalised cannabis

Tuesday 11 Dec 2012

PRIME Minister David Cameron yesterday rejected explosive new calls to make cannabis legal.

A report from the Commons Home Affairs committee had urged a shake-up in the drug laws, which would even decriminalise heroin.

And in a Sun online poll yesterday, 86 per cent of voters were in favour of legalising cannabis.

But Mr Cameron said: “I don’t support decriminalisation. Drugs use is coming down, the emphasis on treatment is absolutely right — and we need to continue with that to make sure we make a difference.

“Also, we need to do more to keep drugs out of our prison.

“These are the Government’s priorities.”

Mr Cameron also rejected calls for a Royal Commission to launch an inquiry into Britain’s drugs laws.
