UK: Fisherman grew drugs to ease pain
Shields Gazette Monday 10 Dec 2012 When police called at Alan Hunter’s home in Somerset Road, Hebburn, they could smell the Class B drug. The officers searched the house, and found 10 plants in a spare room with equipment used for growing them. The 55-year-old was arrested and pleaded guilty to producing the drug at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. He also admitted possessing amphetamine – another Class B drug – after police found a bag of white powder in a kitchen drawer. Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “When the officers asked to see inside the house, he led them to a room with 10 cannabis plants of different sizes inside. “He said he had been growing them for a couple of months. “They also found a bag of white powder which he said had been in the house since he moved in, but he presumed it was drugs of some kind.” Hunter told the police he ordered the cannabis and equipment from the internet so he could use it as pain relief. Val Bell, defending, said: “There is no dispute with the facts. “Officers called at his house for something else then smelled cannabis inside – clearly, they found the plants and he fully co-operated with them and has pleaded guilty. “He worked in the fishing industry in Grimsby for most of his life, and has considerable pain all over his body due to arthritis. “He started using cannabis to help with that.” Magistrates gave Hunter a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £55 costs. Chairman of the bench Dave Errington said: “There are other things you can take for pain relief. “You need to go and see your GP.” Hunter said: “There is nothing they can give me that helps – but I will go back again, and hopefully they can prescribe something to ease the pain.” http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/crime/fisherman-grew-drugs-to-ease-pain-1-5211186
