Gibraltar: 460 kilos cannabis case: Spaniard remanded in custody

Gibraltar Chronicle

Thursday 03 Jan 2013

A Spanish man charged in connection with a major drugs haul over the weekend was remanded in custody yesterday following a first appearance before the Magistrates Court.

Juan Antonio Ruíz Luque, 57 and resident in Algeciras, was arrested by officers of the Royal Gibraltar Police following a joint operation with the Guardia Civil and the Gibraltar Defence Police.

Sr Ruíz was one of three men arrested in the operation, which resulted in the seizure of 460 kilos of cannabis resin with a street value of £2.3m.

He faces charges of possession, possession with intent to supply and importation of the drugs.

The serious nature of the offence means the case will be heard before the Supreme Court.

Yesterday, in line with new procedural rules for criminal trials, the Magistrates Court declined jurisdiction and set a hearing for next week to commit the case to the Supreme Court.

The other two men, both locals, were released on police bail in the sum of £5,000 each until the first week of February.
