ALOR STAR: Two fishermen, one of them a Thai, were sentenced to death by the High Court yesterday for trafficking in 9,589g of cannabis last year.

Judicial commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab ruled that the prosecution had proven a case against Abdul Aziz Yatim from Langkawi and Abdun Hamid Masman from Satun in south Thailand.

Aziz, 42, and Abdun Hamid, 44, were found guilty of committing the offence on an unregistered wooden fishing boat about 0.2 nautical miles from Kuala Jerlun near here at 12.20pm on Jan 9.

Zaki said the court found the defence given by the accused was unacceptable.

"Both accused claimed that they were unaware of the cannabis which were found in their rented fishing boat.

"However, the court finds it hard to believe the defence tendered by the accused."

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nor Hasnita Wan Daud prosecuted while counsel Rahmatullah Burhanuddeen appeared for both accused.

In another case, two lovers who spent four years in prison will return home in time to celebrate Chinese New Year with their family.

Yesterday, Koo Wing Cheung, 29, and his girlfriend, Fan Ting Ting, both Chinese nationals, hugged each other after the Court of Appeal allowed their appeal against a conviction for drug possession.

"I am relieved and all I want is to return home to my family in Hong Kong," said Koo in broken English.

Fan, 25, from Shenzhen in mainland China, was also in tears and said she yearned to return home to celebrate the new year.

The couple, represented by Gooi Soon Seng, had every reason to celebrate their freedom because they first escaped the gallows.

They were initially charged with trafficking in 54g of methamphetamines at a house in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, on March 3, 2009.

Earlier, Gooi submitted that the couple were arrested in the master bedroom but the drugs were found in the kitchen and in another room of the house, which was used by someone else.
