Ireland: Cops bust pot farms at a rate of one a day

A POT farm was discovered in Ireland every day in 2012, the Irish Sun can reveal.

A special investigation into the multi-million-euro industry shows how cops raided 500 cannabis grow houses here last year.

New figures show that almost 60,000 cannabis plants — worth a staggering €44million — were seized by Gardai under Operation Nitrogen.

And 500 people were charged with growing the mind-bending weed over the past 12 months.

One homegrown cannabis plant is valued at about €800, with green-fingered thugs selling one gramme of grass on the street for €20.

And with each plant containing 40 grammes of hash, vicious Asian crime gangs are coining it in. By growing 1,000 plants over a two-month period the hoods rake in a staggering €800,000.

A source said: “The cash involved in this booming industry is unbelievable.

“The hash is mainly used for the domestic market because there is such a big demand in Ireland.”

And Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has also voiced his concern. he said: “Gardai are doing everything they can to bring those responsible for this illegal activity to justice.

“This sector is very lucrative with crops worth millions grown in eight weeks and ready to reproduce immediately.”
