UK: Cannabis 'helped Tourette's sufferer calm himself down' Andrew Dickens Cambridge News Wednesday 16 Jan 2013 Police caught Shem Davidson, 25, disturbing passers-bys while riding his bike around Stourbridge Common, Cambridge, on December 29. Officers were called to the scene to stop him riding the bike – but when they searched his pockets they discovered a plastic bag containing cannabis. Davidson, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court. Monica Lentin, mitigating, said her client had been taking the cannabis to help him cope with his Tourette’s syndrome, which causes him to suffer tics. Ms Lentin said: “My client was taking the cannabis to calm himself down. “It also helps him with his backache, from which he has suffered for a while. “This is a young man who had no fixed abode and very occasionally stays with his mother. “He was fully compliant with police while I was with him during the interview.” Davidson had already received a conditional discharge for a previous offence – but magistrates decided not to impose an additional penalty on to the sentence. He was fined £85 and ordered to pay £50 in court costs as well as a £15 victim surcharge. Yetunde Fawehinmi, prosecuting, said: “When officers saw him on his bike on Stourbridge Common they shouted ‘stop’ to get him off it. “However, this did not work, and one of them then raised their baton to warn him. “He then complied and got off his bicycle. When he was searched, police found a small bag containing the cannabis. “It is believed he had bought the drug for about £11.50.” http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News/Cannabis-helped-Tourettes-sufferer-calm-himself-down-16012013.htm
