GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

An emergency moratorium will likely be put in place in about an hour in Fruita, where city council members will decide if private cannabis clubs will be allowed in the community.

If passed, the ordinance would temporarily prevent any “cannabis clubs” from opening in Fruita until October 1st.

City officials say they're taking these steps to stay ahead of the newly passed amendment 64.

An example of what Fruita officials are trying to avoid is Denver's own "Club 64" A private building where members pay a 30-dollar fee, bring their own marijuana, and use it openly inside.

Fruita city manager, Clint Kenney says, the community needs time to address the new idea.

“There's issues as to the constitutionality of them, to the legality of them, to the safety of them, and they're new to the state, so in order to have a regulatory framework in place, we just need time to discuss it and evaluate it, “explains Kenny.

Kenney added that in order to move forward, city council members first need to understand state regulations.

That understanding he says will allow fruita's laws to work more cohesively.

Time seems to be the key factor for the council, according to kenny, enough time is needed to review the pros, cons and regulations that surround opening a cannabis club.

City council members added that they don't have an official stance on the issue.

The Fruita city council would like to hear your thoughts on the cannabis club issue.
