US: Former Medical Marijuana Provider Chris Williams Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
KFBB Saturday 02 Feb 2013 Judge Dana Christensen says a jury found Chris Williams guilty on eight drug and firearm charges in September and he faced 85 years in prison. According to court documents, in December, prosecutors agreed to dismiss six of the charges in exchange for Williams' waving of his right to appeal the sentence for the two remaining charges. Christensen says Williams will serve a mandatory five years for one charge of possession of a firearm in connection to drug trafficking. He says Williams is also charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Chris Williams was not alone in the courtroom today. Nine people, who call themselves "Drug War Veterans,” made a 3,300 mile journey from California to Missoula to show their support for Williams. The nine medical marijuana advocates drove their "CannaBus" north, through California and Oregon, to sit in on William's sentencing. Anna Barrett says each of the travelers has either been convicted of federal drug charges or knows someone else who has. Barrett says they've felt Williams was facing an unjust sentence and that it was important they protested it. “They follow court cases, and they try to pack the courtrooms with people so they're not alone through this, all of us has been through this and had to stand alone, and that's exhausting,” says Barrett. Barrett says even though Williams’' sentence was dropped to five years she still feels he doesn't deserve punishment. The group will head back to California Saturday. http://www.kfbb.com/news/local/Former-Medical-Marijuana-Provider-Chris-Williams-Sentenced-to-Five-Years-in-Prison-189461701.html
