US regulates marijuana trade like fruit or veg Robert Frichtel Irish Examiner Monday 04 Mar 2013 In America, it’s not as simple for a cannabis patient in the states where marijuana is legal as medicine, or in Colorado and Washington, where it has been approved for recreation. The consumer is left either uninformed or, at best, with anecdotal information. Standards and benchmarks don’t exist. Modern growing techniques and available strains are yielding more potent marijuana today than in the past. Concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, have increased consistently since the 70s, when they averaged about 1%. Today, medical- grade marijuana, often available to recreational users, has concentrations that average 16%. One view says stronger THC concentrations lead consumers to smoke or ingest less cannabis product. This might have the equation backward. I believe it’s more likely that over-consumption occurs, possibly before consumers know they’ve exceeded their comfort level. In November, Colorado voters backed legalisation of recreational marijuana use. It would be sold much like alcohol: via designated stores, only to those over 21. The marijuana industry needs to develop production standards for pesticides and chemicals and appropriate disclosure on labels. — Bloomberg; Robert Frichtel is managing partner of the US-based Medical Marijuana Business Exchange http://www.irishexaminer.com/business/us-regulates-marijuana-trade-like-fruit-or-veg-224367.html
