UK: Grandmother spared jail after giving teenagers cannabis and baking weed cakes

Metro

Friday 15 Mar 2013

A grandmother was let off with a community order after she gave teenagers some of her medical cannabis and encouraged them to bake weed cakes, Falkirk Sheriff Court heard.

The five school children, who were aged between 13 and 15 years old, were permitted by Iris Thornton to make chocolate brownies containing the drug at her home in Dennyoanhead, Stirlingshire.

‘The accused asked them if they wanted to bake brownies and gave them money to buy the cake mix,’ said prosecutor Alison Montgomery.

‘When they returned from the shop she gave them a wrap of herbal cannabis to mix in.’

The 55-year-old grandmother also let the teenagers smoke cannabis, which she had been prescribed for back pain.

Mrs Thornton was busted after a pupil at a local High School was caught with the Class B drug.

The sheriff hearing the case said he was close to giving her a custodial sentence.

William Gallacher added she had risked the well-being of the children who had been in her care.

The grandmother must complete unpaid work as part of her punishment.
