Australia: Fined man defiant on marijuana use for medical purposes Roderick Makim Fraser Coast Chronicle Sunday 17 Mar 2013 Gary Mervyn Howearth pleaded guilty to possessing a small amount of cannabis and some drug utensils at his home in Toogoom on February 24, but was defiant in his defence to using the drug. "I know it's illegal, but I prefer to have a seizure every six to eight months rather than three or four every week," Howearth said. Howearth said he suffered from epilepsy, and cannabis was the best way he had found to lessen the frequency and severity of the seizures that came with the disease. He said he had tried legal medications, but nothing worked as well as the illegal drug. He was adamant he only used the drug for his health, never to supply to anyone else. "What am I going to do with you? asked Magistrate Graeme Tatnell. "I accept what you're saying, but I've got to enforce the law." Mr Tatnell suggested there were some states in the USA that allowed medicinal marijuana, but Howearth was quick to say he had no interest in moving to the other side of the world. Mr Tatnell fined Howearth $400. http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/news/fined-man-defiant-on-drug-use/1794961/
