Belgium: Antwerp mayor is neighbour to 1,000 cannabis plants: 'Ironic' Police raid reveals drug den next door to Bart De Wever

News Europe

Tuesday 26 Mar 2013

The Mayor of Antwerp has been discovered to have an unusual neighbour, a thousand cannabis plants grown by local drug dealers.

The local police with the Antwerp police Special Support Team raided the house next door to Bart De Wever, the leading Flemish nationalist, and found the drug haul. They also confiscated a car and a bulletproof vest. Two men were arrested, one a 34 year old Dutch resident, the other was a 27 year old, said to have been staying in Belgium illegally.

The Flemish nationalist is said to have been one of those who had reported suspicious activity at the house. He told radio listeners, " I was never witness to any drug-related crime."

De Vever has declared a 'war on drugs' in Antwerp as his "number one priority," and described the incident as "ironic" on VRT Radio.
