UK: Only two arrested as “thousands” meet in Hyde Park for cannabis demo

Thousands gathered in Hyde Park this Saturday to openly smoke cannabis - but only two people were arrested for possessing it.

The event, National Pot Smoking Day, had been on Scotland Yard’s radar, a spokesman said, but it was “difficult to tell who there to mark the event and who was just enjoying the sunshine”.

Up to 2,000 people attended the event, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Two people were arrested for possession of cannabis, Scotland Yard said.

Fourteen people were issued cannabis warnings and one person, believed to be connected to the event, was arrested for robbery.

A spokesman for the Met defended the small number of arrests for possession of the Class B drug - which can carry up to a five year sentence - despite the apparently large crowds.

Supt Jon Morgan said: “In anticipation of increased numbers of visitors we had extra officers in place, including special constables on patrol in the area.

“In previous years we have had a couple of hundred people attending the park, wanting to support this event - on this occasion numbers in the park were far greater but it is difficult to tell who was just enjoying the sunshine.”

“However, regardless of their reason for being in the park, anyone seen by officers openly smoking cannabis in Hyde Park or elsewhere in Westminster would be dealt with in the same way, either by means of a cannabis warning or an arrest.”
