Nigeria: NDLEA destroys 102 tonnes of Cannabis IJEOMAH UMEH The Nigerian Observer Thursday 09 May 2013 Speaking during the public destruction of the drugs exhibit, the chairman and Chief Executive, NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, represented by the secretary, Otunba Femi Ajayi, stated that the drugs were the result of daily raid by the state command of the Agency. He said that the command has successfully traced and seized cannabis concealed in vehicles and secret warehouse. According to him, there could not have been a better time to launch a fatal onslaught on drug barons who produce and sell drugs to other people’s children and wards in their bid to amass ill-gotten wealth.” He stated that the Agency is into strategic partnership with both local and international partners even while relying on information on Nigerians involved in drug trafficking business abroad. The chairman quoting the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said cannabis remains by far the most widely produced and consumed illicit substance globally. He said the long term and regular use have high potency and chances of increasing the risk of psychotic disorders, with ripple effects spread through families, friends, neighbours and entire community. He however, assured that the struggle to eliminate illicit drugs from the country is making steady progress as the Agency is winning on all sides. Earlier, the State Commander, NDLEA, Edo State Command, Alhaji Sani Sani stated that the seizure of the over 102.715 kilogramme of Narcotics and psychotropic drugs is a result of painstaking operations carried out by officers and men of the command in the last year ending in December. The State Commander noted that the exercise underscores the modest achievement recorded by the command which is also intended to serve as clear signal to the ‘merchants of death’ whom, he stated, had caused untold hardship to both individuals and families. On hand to witness the destruction were officials of NAFDAC, Nigerian Customs Service, the Police, SSS, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Army, National Youth Service Corps, Drug Free Club, NAPTIP and representatives of various civil society groups. http://nigerianobservernews.com/09052013/news/news6.html
