ALOR STAR: A 51-year-old driver and his =assistant were among three people sentenced to death by the High Court today after they were found guilty of trafficking in cannabis six years ago.

Mohammad Fadzli Ali and his 39-year-old assistant Shamsuri Said were sent to the gallows after they were found guilty of trafficking in 6.503kg of the drug.

The third person who also received the death sentence was Mohd. Farid Rameli, 32, a worker at a car workshop in Sungai Kob, Kulim, near here.

The trio faced a joint charge of trafficking in the drug by the roadside near Kampung Permatang Tok Dik, Padang Serai, in Kulim near here at 9.45pm Oct 11, 2007.

According to the charge sheet, police found seven slabs of the drug stacked inside the trunk of a car belonging to Mohammad Fadzli.

Judge Datuk Zamani A. Rahim ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against the three accused beyond reasonable doubt while the defence of the accused contradicted with the statements given by witnesses in the case.

"The court cannot accept the defence by the three accused," he said.

"Thus they have failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case."

Zamani added that the defence of the three accused also contradicted with one another.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nor Hasnita Wan Daud prosecuted while counsel Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid appeared for the three accused.
