Sierra Leone: 40 year-old woman fined for Diamba Nancy Koroma Awoko Saturday 25 May 2013 It was alleged that the accused on Tuesday 21st May 2013 at 22 Abbot street was found in the possession of 29 ties of cannabis sativa without lawful authority. Count two alleges that the accused on the same day and date was found frequenting herself in a place used for smoking cannabis sativa. The five other suspects were Musa Deen, Abdul Tamba Saffa, Mohamed Fullah, Abubakarr Kamara and Abubakarr Hamid. These accused were brought on a count charge of frequenting a place used for smoking cannabis sativa. When the charges were read, all the accused pleaded guilty and begged for mercy. Representing all the accused was E. T Koroma and P. Squire. In addressing the Magistrate, lead defence counsel E. T. Koroma said that all the accused have not wasted the court's time and they are remorseful for what they have done, as they will not in any way repeat the offence. He pleaded with the Magistrate to temper justice with mercy and to caution and discharge the accused accordingly. He also pleaded that the fine should be reasonable and minimal. In response the prosecutor P C 8534 Sesay G. said that the Magistrate should use his discretion in this matter. On that note, the Magistrate ruled that the first accused Fatmata Deen will take the heavy punishment as compared to the others simply because she was found in possession of cannabis sativa. She was fined Le900,000 (nine hundred thousand Leones) or six months imprisonment, while the other accused were fined Le100,000 (one hundred thousand Leones) or two months imprisonment.
