US: Marijuana supporters rally at the Point

Triblive

Saturday 25 May 2013

Presence Mercier invoked a higher power Saturday during a pro-marijuana rally at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh.

"God gave us cannabis," read the handmade sign she clutched at "Buds in the Burgh, Toke II," a protest against cannabis prohibition organized by Pittsburgh NORML.

"Who am I to say God was wrong?" asked Mercier, 35, of Rochester, Beaver County.

More than 60 people rallied and marched to publicize their cause to legalize marijuana use in Pennsylvania.

"We are productive members of society. We have jobs and careers. We own houses and have children. But we are treated like criminals," said organizer Julia Johnson, 21, of the North Side.

Pittsburgh NORML is the local chapter of the National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws.

Among the signs carried by protesters were ones that read, "Farmers not felons," "It's just a plant" and "Vote yes on SB 528."

The last one referred to a bill in the Pennsylvania Senate that would legalize marijuana use in the state.
