UK: Cannabis helps deal with pain - Millom gardener
North West Evening Mail Thursday 27 Jun 2013 James Craven-Hodgson, from Holborn Hill, Millom, pleaded guilty to possession of a quantity of cannabis, and growing a single cannabis plant in his bathroom, at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Police attended the 33-year-old’s house when a neighbour reported a strong smell of the drug. Mr Craven-Hodgson told the Evening Mail he considers his crime “victimless”, and says cannabis helps him deal with rheumatism in his shoulder and back pain caused by the accident. “I was 11 years old when he hit me. He came speeding over Buckman Brow at 80mph, I stepped out and when he saw me he slammed his brakes on and went into a slide. He must have knocked me 15 feet in the air,” he said. No-one was ever convicted for the incident. “When I woke up in hospital I knew what had happened, and I thought I must be dead. I couldn’t believe I survived.” Mr Craven-Hodgson says he rolls a “single cannabis cigarette” every couple of weeks to help him sleep when his injuries play up. “Some people would go to their doctor for medication, but I have a friend who was prescribed morphine and now he’s addicted to it. If I was on painkillers I don’t think I would be able to run my business week to week.” he said. Mr Craven-Hodgson says he feels lucky he is self employed – as the conviction could have cost him his job. He said: “I will take it on the chin but I don’t feel like I have committed a crime because there’s no victim, and there’s no threat to anyone but me. I have never been in trouble with the police before and I have never committed any other crime. “It could be a good source of revenue for the government and if people were allowed to grow a couple of their own plants it would stop dealers making easy money.” Mr Craven-Hodgson said he feels the drug should be prescribed for medicinal purposes. He added: “Some say it’s a good source of relief from chronic pain and anxiety, while other people say it can cause anxiety. I don’t know who is right, but I have not lost the plot yet.” He was fined £300 for the offences, and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge. District Judge Mr Gerald Chalk said in court: “This is an illegal substance. If you carry on misusing illegal drugs the fines will get higher and higher.” http://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/cannabis-helps-deal-with-pain-millom-gardener-1.1066127?referrerPath=
