The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, on Wednesday, said it has convicted 46 suspects into various terms of imprisonment and also arrested 84 suspects with over 2,000 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa popularly known as Indian hemp.

This was disclosed by the state commander of the agency, Bala Fagge, in his address to commemorate this year’s United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, held at Simeon Adebo Library, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.

Bagge also said the agency uncovered and destroyed about 73 hectares of cannabis farm in various forest reserves in the state in 2012. He expressed worries over the high rate of “illicit consumption of trafficking of cannabis in the state.”

He said, “In our efforts to further tackle the drug problems, the state command has in the last six months arrested 84 suspects with over two thousand kilogrammes of illicit drugs made up mostly of cannabis sativa. Within this period also, 46 suspects have been convicted by the Federal High Court, Abeokuta to various terms of imprisonment.

“Last year, the command also identified and destroyed about 73 hectares of cannabis farms located in various forest reserves in the State”.

Fagge declared that the drug barons and traffickers had found companions in the youths and young children in psycho-active substance consumption and distribution, saying the recent events had shown that the nation was becoming a user country as “drug barons have found new customers in the youths, the most vulnerable group prone to drug abuse”.

In another development, the Niger State command of NDLEA on Tuesday said it has arrested 66 suspects with 1, 864.96 kilogrammes of various illicit drug substances in the state this year.

The state’s commander of the agency,Alhaji Abdullahi Abdul, said this in Minna during a press briefing to mark the 2013 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, tagged “New Psychoactive substances and its Consequences.”

The commander said “between January to June 2013, the command arrested 66 suspects with a total of 1, 864 .96 kilogramme of various illicit drug substances of which Indian hemp took the lead.” Abdul said 26 of the suspects have been convicted to various jail terms by the Federal High Court in Minna while 21 clients have been counselled in the command and the rest of the cases still ongoing in court.

He said this year’s event with the slogan was aimed at raising awareness on the major problems posed by illicit drugs to the society, especially to the young people.
