UK: Police winning war on production of cannabis in county Tom Norton Nottingham Post Tuesday 16 Jul 2013 A Freedom of Information request made by the Post showed a 19 per cent drop – from 209 in 2011-12 to 170 in 2012-13. Arrests for production of the drug have fallen by nearly 25 per cent – from 617 in 2011 to 466 in 2012. Police say the figures prove a crackdown on cannabis production is having an impact. Over the past year, officers have uncovered several large crops – some in homes in Newark, Hucknall and Lady Bay, West Bridgford – worth millions of pounds combined. A police spokeswoman said: "We have drugs experts to help us combat this crime and are hiring a cannabis dismantling and warrants officer. "We work hard to combat commercial cannabis cultivations across the county. "Cannabis users in custody can be referred to health services to help them kick the habit." Kirk Blacker, manager of Studio House rehab centre, New Basford, said a number of clients had come to them with problems caused by cannabis, including some who had moved on to harder drugs. "The same people selling cannabis are often selling heroin and cocaine." said Mr Blacker. He said police were taking the right approach by targeting farms and dealers over low-level offenders. He said: "I think the police do a great job in what they're doing, rather than concentrating on users of cannabis." One of its service users, a 43-year-old man from Sneinton who wishes to remain anonymous, said he used to have a cannabis crop making between £10,000 and £13,000 every four weeks. He said he was never caught and the police wouldn't deter others from growing cannabis either. "I don't think there's any less cannabis on the streets today," he said. "You can buy all the equipment you need on the high street, that's still legal, and with the recession, it's no surprise this is still happening." "I lost my job, it destroyed my marriage and destroyed my life," he added. "It's addictive, I don't care what people say." http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/Police-winning-war-production-cannabis-county/story-19523774-detail/story.html#ixzz2ZC9HopJV
