Potheads Can Be Athletes, Too

The Austinist

Wednesday 24 Jul 2013

Stop thinking of pot consumers as louche good-for-nothings—some of them are perfectly productive members of society who run marathons and the like, thank you very much. Meet the face of the destigmatized pot consumer: Team Hope through Cannabis, or THC. (Get it? Get it?)

"While there’s truth to the idea that some consumers are lazy, as many people are with or without cannabis use, there are many who are athletes, sports fans, runners, and just regular people," Texas Cannabis Report writes. See? Regular people. Like Willie Nelson.

Or maybe more like Michael Phelps and Olympic snowboarder Ross Rebagliati, both athletes that were dredged through the public's ire after being caught smoking pot. But shifting public attitudes and competitive sports regulations are certainly making serious strides to, if not necessarily decriminalize, makeover the average pot consumer's public image—it's not all scenes from Pineapple Express, so to speak.

The team has participated in quite a few marathons and races in the past year, including the Statesman 10K.

“I believe that THC has spread awareness of and support for marijuana policy reform in the state of Texas, as well as successfully fought against the ‘stoner stereotype,'" THC organizer Greg Ryan told Texas Cannabis Report. "Numerous people have approached us at fitness and athletics events around Austin. This gives us the opportunity to tell people about marijuana policy reform efforts and encourage them to contact their legislators.”
