Turkish security forces have seized 4.9 tons of cannabis worth over 742 million U.S. dollars in southeastern Turkey, an official statement said Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The anti-drug operation was launched by the Diyarbakir Gendarmerie Regional Command in Lice border town of Diyarbakir province on Tuesday, with assistance of 20 helicopters and several unmanned aerial vehicles, said the statement issued by Diyarbakir Governor's Office.

In early July, the security forces found and destroyed 6,150, 000 marijuana roots and 54 kg of cannabis sativa in the region.

Turkey has long been a key transit point along the drug smuggling route from Asia and Middle East to Europe.
