UK: Cannabis protesters descend on Town Hall lawns

Thursday 01 Aug 2013

MEMBERS of the Merseyside Cannabis Supporters group descended on the lawn outside the Town Hall for a ‘peaceful protest and smoke-out’ to highlight their ‘complete disgust’ over a council campaign.

Around 20 to 30 people attended the event on Friday with the group stating they hoped Warrington Borough Council had ‘got the message they would not be lied to’ after launching a controversial awareness initiative surrounding the Class B drug.

Smokers vented their fury on Facebook last week after the council’s £1,500 It’s Not Just a Joint’ campaign included the comment: “Did you know that cannabis can be stronger than heroin?”

Protestors said the comments were ‘completely inaccurate’ and they hoped their actions would ensure other councils do not publicise similar claims.

One member, who had helped organise the smoke out, said: “We would do this outside any council as we don’t want to see others making similar claims.

“It’s going to lead to young people mistrusting what they are being told.

“I was disgusted when I saw the claims and the council has completely ignored us.

“We were so appalled we have travelled from Merseyside.”

Alan Blythe, aged 67 and from Runcorn said he was angry and concerned when he saw the council’s claims.

He added: “I have got a 13-year-old granddaughter and I’m here after they suggested heroin is the drug of choice over cannabis.”

The volume of comments led to the Warrington Borough Council’s Facebook page being shut down overnight before the initiative was withdrawn with the promise it was being ‘reviewed’.

Speaking after the protest, members of Merseyside Cannabis Supporters described the event as a ‘very successful and informative day’.
