Belgium: 'Illegal cannabis cultivation surges in Belgium'

Presseurope

Thursday 22 Aug 2013

Some 20 people are to be tried before the criminal court in Liège in the autumn, in the wake of an investigation by Belgian and Dutch police after a months-long operation to dismantle a vast network of cannabis producers and traders.

The case has highlighted the huge surge in cannabis cultivation in recent years, remarks La Libre Belgique, which quotes a judge who specialises in drug prosecutions —

A few years ago, the cases involved relative amateurs. Now barely a week goes by without the discovery of a hangar or a villa managed in a professional way.

The most recent Belgian directive on cannabis, which dates from February 1, 2005, allows adults to hold up to 3 grams of the drug, and to grow cannabis for strictly personal use.
