India: Officials to face action for cannabis cultivation in areas their jurisdiction: Kullu police
Times of India Wednesday 04 Sep 2013 According to police, it is the duty of forest guards and patwaris to check encroachment on forest and non-forest land for illegal cultivation. Kullu police had requested government to send reserve police force to destroy the identified cannabis fields in Kullu. The reserve force has reached Kullu and over 100 police personnel have been given the task of destroying cannabis plants in remote areas of the district. Kullu police chief Dr Vinod Dhawan said, "More than 100 police personnel have been given the task to destroy cannabis plants. Police will be booking the owners of land used for cannabis cultivation. Forest guards and patwaris will be accountable for cannabis farming in forest and other lands." Police have already marked cannabis-affected areas where plants are ready to yield resin to make charas. Police had earlier destroyed large portion of farms by using chemical sprays. Now they will destroy the plants manually by using reaping hooks, sticks and cutter machines. Police claim they collected information about area under cannabis cultivation from various sources including satellite cameras and intelligence sources. On December 2011, Kullu police had asked Kullu deputy commissioner to take action against 20 patwaris and 16 forest guards who did not report cultivation of opium and cannabis under their jurisdiction. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Officials-to-face-action-for-cannabis-cultivation-in-areas-their-jurisdiction-Kullu-police/articleshow/22307005.cms
