UK: Drug user warned about throat cancer

Hertfordshire Mercury

Tuesday 10 Sep 2013

A cannabis user who grew his own skunk in his loft was caught after being stopped by police as he drove through Waltham Cross.

It was a routine stop, but officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis about Christopher Christodoulou.

They found two tubs of cannabis in his pockets, which he said he had just bought for £200 for his own use.

But when his home was searched, more cannabis was found, and cannabis plants were growing in the loft.

Today (Tuesday) Judge David Farrell QC told Christodoulou to change his ways or he would end up in prison.

Judge Farrell QC, sitting at Luton crown court, told Christodoulou that he risked psychological problems, and throat cancer and should be ashamed of the example he was setting to his family.

Christodoulou, 41, of Manton Road, Enfield, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply, cultivating cannabis and possessing cannabis for his own use.

Isabel Delamere, prosecuting, told the court that Christodoulou was stopped by police while driving in Waltham Cross on July 15 last year.

Miss Delamere said the potential yield of skunk from the 21 plants found at his home could have fetched more than £8,000 if sold in street deals.

But she said the prosecution accepted that the defendant was growing mainly for his own use, or for social supply, and was not dealing commercially.

He told police he preferred to grow his own so he did not have to get involved with dealers.

The court heard he had a conviction 13 years ago for possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

After Judge Farrell made it clear that he was not considering a custodial sentence, Christodoulou's barrister said he would not address the court in mitigation.

Judge Farrell said: "I must follow the sentencing guidelines which indicate a community order, but you have a previous conviction, albeit it is more than a decade ago.

"But you are still smoking cannabis and are not prepared to address that, but you must do so. You will not be dealt with so leniently if you are caught again.

"Cannabis causes psychological difficulties and throat cancer. You are a family man and should be ashamed of yourself."

The judge gave him a 12-month community order with 200 hours unpaid work.
