UK: Letter: Right to allow cannabis cafes.

A recent letter asked if cannabis users should be given a place where they can safely meet.

I think they absolutely should.

Cannabis use is a significant part of our culture, in spite of its legal status.. the fact is that many people use cannabis and will continue to do so.

As a mild psychedelic, “set and setting” (mindset and physical settings) are of paramount importance when using cannabis.

While the legal status means there is an inherent sense of wrongdoing surrounding its use, if we provide comfortable settings in which people could smoke, that would be a step in the right direction. Not only would it help reduce public stigma it would also allow people to enjoy cannabis where it is supposed to be enjoyed – outside in a natural setting.

people should not have to smoke cannabis while constantly looking over their shoulder, worried about whether police may pull up and arrest them.

I believe cannabis is as a safe drug when used responsibly, especially compared to other popular drugs (tobacco and alcohol for example).

Moreover, its medicinal benefits are really quite incredible, and if allowing people to meet and smoke in public also helps raise awareness and understanding of this (which I think it inevitably would), then that could only be a positive thing.
