Australia: 'Cannabis is from God' crusader freed from jail
Sunshine Coast Daily Friday 20 Sep 2013 Pieta Michelle Morgan had been in custody after she was arrested on Saturday for failing to appear in court on September 2 on drug charges. Magistrate Bernadette Callaghan said it had played on her mind that Ms Morgan's time in custody was greater than the penalty she was likely to receive even if found guilty of drug charges. "It's greatly concerned me because at the end of the day, she won't get jail," Ms Callaghan said. Ms Morgan, 37, formerly of Mapleton, was granted bail on the condition that she reside at a Mount Mee address. She also agreed to attend court for a hearing of the charges on December 17. Extra security was in place for the appearance of Ms Morgan, who some regard as a freedom campaigner. Four police officers waited near her in the dock and a security guard collected mobile phones from people as they entered the courtroom. After her release, Ms Morgan said the charges, her arrest - which she termed a kidnapping - and the court proceedings were illegal. Her supporters said they had supplied documents to the court from the International Common Law Courts of Justice saying she had diplomatic immunity and her detention was unlawful. Ms Morgan, who maintains the Bible gives people the right to all seed-bearing plants, said she would be back in December to fight the charges and welcomed any help that a QC might offer. "It's a herb and it's my God given right and it's a fight worth fighting," she said. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/cannabis-crusader-freed/2026667/
