MAN CHARGED WITH HAVING A CRUMB OF CANNABIS

A Temple Sowerby man found with a crumb of cannabis resin in a tobacco tin was
charged with possession rather than referred to a drug rehabilitation scheme
because he had already taken the initiative to get onto a scheme himself, a
court has heard, Christopher Charles Stout 29 of Croft Place was granted a 6
month conditional discharge by Eden Magistrates after admitting possessing
cannabis resin.

Prosecuting Peter Kelly said Stout had been searched and the cannabis found in
a tin with 4 ordinary cigarettes. Stout had one caution for a similar offence
in 1998 said Kelly.

In mitigation Grail Heard said the cannabis in question was a 3mm crumb which
was worth no more than a few pence. Stout suffered from depression ,but had
taken steps to retrain and sort his life out. He had no previous convictions
for drug use, but was in a worse position than someone who had ignored their
responsibilities, said Miss Heard.
