UK: Tadley man who smoked cannabis to help arthritis pain prosecuted for dealing the drug to his family

A MAN who smoked cannabis as pain relief from his arthritis turned to dealing the drug to members of his family.

Police officers came across Steven Hooker, of Hangar Road, Tadley, when he was sitting in his parked car in Overton on January 21 this year.

Simon Edwards, prosecuting the case at Winchester Crown Court, said: “A search was carried out, during the course of which Steven Hooker admitted to being an occasional user of cannabis.

“He voluntarily surrendered five zip lock bags, and four contained a brown substance which he said was cannabis resin.”

The officers found more bags of resin in a Tesco shopping bag on the front seat and a cigarette box, and his mobile phone contained evidence of dealing, Mr Edwards said.

The court heard the total weight of cannabis resin found was 56.51grams, with a street value of £250.

Hooker, 53, had pleaded guilty to one count of possession of cannabis with intent to supply at an earlier hearing.

David Reid, defending, said: “This is a man that has had a long-standing problem with arthritis and uses cannabis as a form of pain relief, but he has foolishly extended that into buying for two relatives and making no financial benefit whatsoever.”

Judge Peter Ralls gave Hooker a 12-month community order, with 100 hours unpaid work and a £60 victim surcharge.
