The Economist Debate: Should Cannabis Be Legalized Everywhere?

Pop on over to The Economist to vote on whether or not cannabis should be taxed and regulated worldwide. After two days of voting, the yes contingent was winning this morning 94-6 percent.

Supporting the drug war, Neil McKeganey of the Center for Drug Misuse Research, who says, 'Yes, drug war, because marijuana makes people crazy.'

Defending legalization is Ethan Nadelmann from the Drug Policy Alliance, who notes, "The Drug Enforcement Administration's own administrative law judge, Francis Young, came to the conclusion in 1988 that 'marijuana may well be the safest psychoactive substance commonly used in human history'.

"But when all is said and done, the principal, and most principled, argument in favor of ending marijuana prohibition is this: whether or not I or anyone else consumes marijuana should be none of the government's business—so long as I'm not behind the wheel of a car or otherwise putting others at risk."
