Who said Switzerland was boring? Nation becomes latest to decriminalise cannabis possession Sam Adams The Mirror Thursday 03 Oct 2013 Switzerland has become the latest European nation to decriminalise possession of cannabis. A change in the law makes possession of the drug a minor misdemeanour which will not go on the person's criminal record. Instead of facing legal proceedings, anyone found with up to 10g of the drug will have to pay an on-the-spot fine of around £68, according to the Independent. The change was approved after a long process of debate in the Swiss parliament. It is hoped it will also cut costs by avoiding thousands of cases of cannabis possession coming before the courts each year. Other European countries to have decriminalised possession or use of cannabis to some extent include Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Holland and the Czech Republic. Britain's drug laws are relatively strict, with possession of cannabis is punishable by a maximum of five years in prison. Portugal became the first country in the world to decriminalise all drugs in 2001. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/switzerland-decriminalise-possession-cannabis-2336638
